Wooden Story is a small family-run workshop in the Beskid mountains of southern Poland, run by people who have been working with wood for several generations and who finish what they make with beeswax and botanical oils rather than lacquer or paint. The result is the thing you can tell immediately from holding one of their pieces: wood that still feels like wood. Warm to the touch, slightly grippy, faintly fragrant if you put your nose to it. The toys are simple in form by design — stacking shapes, rolling things, vehicles without faces, blocks that suggest something rather than insisting on it — which is the philosophy that distinguishes Wooden Story from the wider category of educational wooden toys. They are not telling the child what to do with them. They are leaving the room.

The range runs from rattles and grasping toys for the very smallest, through stacking sets and ride-on cars, to landscape-scale building blocks that work as well on a coffee table as on a nursery floor. The aesthetic is the rare wooden-toy aesthetic that doesn't actually look like a toy — these are objects you'll find yourself happy to see left out at the end of the day, which is most of the practical case for owning anything in a home with small children. FSC-certified, packaged in recycled materials, made without shortcuts in a country with a long tradition of wooden toy-making, and built solidly enough that they almost certainly outlast the childhood they were bought for. Heirloom is a word that gets thrown about a lot in this category. With Wooden Story it is just an accurate description of what tends to happen.
