Cold-Process Soap. Made Slowly in Estonia.

V.O.H has been making solid soap, hair care, and home spa essentials in Estonia since 2014, using the cold process method — which is the way soap was made before someone worked out how to do it faster, and which produces noticeably different results. The technique involves blending oils at low temperatures and leaving the resulting bars to cure for over four weeks, during which the saponification reaction completes slowly enough to retain the natural glycerin, vitamins, and fatty acids that get burned off in industrial soap-making. The bars come out softer-feeling, longer-lasting, and (this is the sneakier benefit) entirely plastic-free as a category, because solid soap doesn't require a bottle. The whole proposition is broadly the same one you would have got from a soap-maker a hundred years ago — a bar of soap that is just a bar of soap, made well — with the additional benefit of not contributing a small piece of plastic to a landfill every time you finish a bottle of body wash.

The range covers solid soap bars, shampoo and conditioner bars, body bars, and a small set of home spa essentials — all hand-poured, cured for the same patient several weeks, and packaged in paper rather than plastic. The bars are scented with essential oils where they are scented at all, which is the right way to do fragrance in a category where "parfum" on the label tends to mean something synthetic and unspecified. V.O.H operates out of Estonia, where the small-batch handmade tradition is still close enough to living memory to feel less like marketing positioning and more like the way things have always been done. The case for buying soap from a small Estonian workshop rather than a multinational supermarket brand isn't really a moral one. It is the simpler observation that one of them is going to feel and last considerably better than the other.
