Music belongs on Sostter for the same reason every other category here does: somewhere, somebody is making it properly, on a small scale, with care for the people involved and a refusal to cut corners. The music industry — being, on the whole, a fairly grim place — has spent the past several decades treating young artists as commodities, locking them into restrictive contracts, taking ownership of their recordings, and keeping most of the money for itself. The Music & Vinyl collection at Sostter exists for the makers who do it differently.

The collection is anchored by Last Night From Glasgow, Scotland's not-for-profit independent record label, founded in 2016 by Ian Smith on the genuinely radical premise that artists ought to keep their intellectual property and be paid fairly for their work. The label operates from a remarkably blue unit in Glasgow's Hidden Lane and runs a bricks-and-mortar record shop called Music From Big Blue, worth a stop in person if you find yourself in Finnieston. Beyond the vinyl and CDs, the collection extends into music-themed gifts: hoodies, t-shirts, prints, posters and properly considered memorabilia from independent UK makers. Nothing here is corporate, nothing is mass-produced, and nothing comes from a label whose business model relies on exploiting the artists whose work it sells.
