Gerda Retter Design
Geometric Leather Bags from a Tartu Atelier.
Gerda Retter Design is an Estonian leather goods brand founded in 2016 by Gerda Retter herself — at a time when she was still studying leather design at Tartu Art College (now part of Pallas University), and had completed internships at accessory companies in Italy and Hungary. Her workshop sits in the renovated Aparaaditehas (literally "The Widget Factory") complex in Tartu — a former Soviet-era industrial building that has become one of southern Estonia's most respected creative hubs — where Gerda handcrafts each piece in small batches using only high-quality chrome-tanned leathers. The brand's design signature is the substantive intersection of two normally separate aesthetic vocabularies: spatial forms and geometric shapes (drawn from architectural principles) on the one hand, and the quiet Nordic colour palette and material restraint that runs through Estonian and Scandinavian design more broadly on the other. The result is leather pieces that feel sculpturally considered rather than merely stylish — bags that look as though they could sit on a gallery plinth, with the pleasing additional property that they also work as bags.
