Die Gestalten Verlag
The Berlin Design Publisher Behind the World's Best Coffee-Table Books.
Die Gestalten Verlag — known internationally as gestalten — is a Berlin-based publishing house founded in 1995 by Markus Hollmann-Loges, Andreas Peyerl, and Robert Klanten, and now one of the most globally recognised independent publishers in the visual-culture, design, and lifestyle category. The house operates from Mariannenstr. 9-10 in Kreuzberg, with offices in Berlin, London, New York, and Tokyo, and a distribution network that reaches every continent. Three imprints sit beneath the umbrella: gestalten (the flagship, covering architecture, design, photography, travel, food, and contemporary art), teNeues (the photography-and-illustrated-book imprint with a heritage going back to 1931 and a working relationship with BMW, Porsche, and Cartier, brought into the gestalten family in November 2024), and Little gestalten (the children's-books imprint pairing illustrated stories with serious visual culture). Sostter carries the wider catalogue with more than 230 titles, which is the largest single-brand presence on the marketplace.
The catalogue covers the categories gestalten has built its reputation on: architecture (Alpine Refuges, American Icons Volumes 1 and 2, Bespoke Interior Design Stories), travel (the full Monocle Travel Guide series — Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Bangkok, Beirut, and the wider city library co-published with Tyler Brûlé's Monocle), the brand's properly authoritative car and motorcycle books (Beautiful Machines, The Italians, The Germans, Being Marc Marquez), food and cookbooks (A Taste of the World, A Year with Our Food Stories), photography and illustrated lifestyle (Boatlife, Bikepacking), interiors (Kitchen Interiors, Creative Homes, The House of Green), the menswear-canon volume The Savile Row Suit, and the Little gestalten children's range (All My Animals, Alphabetics, Animals Everywhere, Ask Me About Dinosaurs). Pricing runs from around £8.95 for poster books to £60 for the more substantial coffee-table volumes. The brand also operates a "buy a book, plant a tree" partnership, which is the small operational detail that distinguishes a publisher who has thought about its environmental footprint from one that hasn't.
