Baltland is a small Latvian sustainable fashion brand from Riga that has, rather wisely, decided to do exactly one thing extraordinarily well: socks. Specifically, premium merino wool socks. The proposition is more interesting than it sounds, because merino wool is the slightly miraculous fibre — it lasts roughly six times longer than cotton, it regulates temperature naturally (cool when one is warm, warm when one is cool), it wicks moisture away from skin, it's naturally odour-resistant for days on end, and it dries faster than the synthetic alternatives. Which means one washes a pair of these notably less than one washes the high-street equivalents — saving water, energy, and rather a lot of time.

The supply chain is the small properly admirable bit: yarn from Germany, socks knitted in Latvia, packaging from Poland and Lithuania — every step within Europe, with proper OEKO-TEX certification on the materials. The construction includes the small thoughtful details (arch support, elastic calf, targeted cushioning, seamless toe, ribbed elastic cuff) and the design language draws from traditional Baltic patterns translated into a quietly contemporary register. Socks come with a two-year warranty against defects and a 30-day return policy, which is the rather uncommon thing in the sock category and tells you most of what you need to know about the brand's confidence in what they make. £18 a pair, which is properly fair given the engineering involved.
