Six Dots Design
Sculptural Furniture and Homeware. Made by Joseph in North London.
Six Dots Design was founded in 2020 by Joseph Ellwood — an architecture graduate who discovered during a work placement with a furniture maker that what he actually wanted to do was make furniture, not design buildings. He set up Six Dots straight out of university, taking commissions from friends and family while developing a practice and a point of view. In 2021 he took six chairs and an arcade claw machine to Design London during the London Design Festival. In 2022 Wallpaper* magazine named him one of ten Future Icons of design in Britain. The Contemporary Vanity collection — his first full laser-cut aluminium range — he toured around in the boot and on the roof of his VW Golf, and it was picked up by Sight Unseen and House & Garden. He has since collaborated with Rimowa and Maison Margiela. He is currently completing his master's degree at the Royal College of Art. The arc, in short, is one of the more compelling in British design right now.
The work is deliberately difficult to categorise, which is the point. Joseph takes his inspiration from Charlotte Perriand and Jean Prouvé — the rigour of mid-century modernism — and then distorts it, bends it, makes it strange and human and occasionally surreal in ways that feel entirely contemporary. Laser-cut aluminium, raw-finished, fully recyclable. Bespoke and made to order in the North London workshop, with custom adjustments available for most pieces. The aesthetic sits somewhere between sculpture and everyday object — a desk that makes you look twice, a chair that makes you feel something, homeware that you keep moving around the room trying to find its best angle. Six Dots champions self-expression, imperfection and visible character in the things that surround us, and makes that position visible in every object it produces.
